Managed Cloud Servers in India vs Developer Clouds vs AWS EC2 (2026)

Cloud server in Mumbai from ₹3,000 vs US developer clouds from $4 vs AWS EC2 Mumbai from $16 (12 Oct 2026). Who runs the server, and what the price omits.

A matte navy balance scale with one gold pan, on warm paper.

Three ways to get a Linux server for a production website or app in India, with 12 October 2026 prices: a developer cloud VM from $4 a month that you run yourself; an AWS EC2 instance in Mumbai from $16 a month for a small burstable instance, plus storage and transfer, that you also run yourself; or a ZenoCloud cloud server in Mumbai from ₹3,000 a month, with our operations team available as an add-on or a fully managed plan from ₹7,999. For a business without a sysadmin, the managed option is the one where someone else is accountable for the server. For a developer who wants an API and a credit card, the first is fine. For a team already built on AWS services, the second, and we can run that too.

Last verified: 12 October 2026. Market dollar prices are converted at ₹95.78 to the dollar (ECB, 12 October 2026); ZenoCloud's dollar figures are its separately published prices, not conversions. Monthly estimates use 730 hours. All prices exclude taxes.

The three products

Developer clouds sell virtual machines with a clean panel, an API and a tutorial library. One US provider we checked on 12 October 2026 lists basic VMs from $4 a month (1 vCPU, 512 MiB) up to $18 (2 vCPU, 2 GiB), and general-purpose VMs at $63 (2 vCPU, 8 GiB), $126 (4 vCPU, 16 GiB) and $252 (8 vCPU, 32 GiB), with outbound transfer allowances that grow with size. It has an Indian region. You are the sysadmin.

AWS EC2 sells instances in its Mumbai region (ap-south-1). On-demand Linux prices from the AWS price list on 12 October 2026: t3.small (2 vCPU, 2 GiB, burstable) $0.0224 an hour, about $16 a month; t3.medium (2 vCPU, 4 GiB) $0.0448, about $33; m6i.large (2 vCPU, 8 GiB) $0.101, about $74; m6i.xlarge (4 vCPU, 16 GiB) $0.202, about $147; m5.2xlarge (8 vCPU, 32 GiB) $0.404, about $295. EBS storage, a public IPv4 address and data transfer out beyond the free 100 GB a month are billed on top. You are still the sysadmin, with a much larger catalogue to configure.

ZenoCloud cloud servers are VMs in Mumbai on NVMe with a 1 Gbps uplink, sold monthly on a rupee invoice, self-managed by default, with managed stack and managed ops as add-ons. Prices from the cloud server page on 12 October 2026:

Plan vCPU RAM NVMe Bandwidth Price (INR, excl. GST) Published USD price
Starter 2 4 GB 60 GB 3 TB ₹3,000 $36
Business 4 8 GB 150 GB 7 TB ₹6,500 $78
Performance 8 16 GB 300 GB 15 TB ₹12,000 $144

A smaller VPS line starts at ₹2,500 for 2 vCPU and 4 GB. Managed hosting, where we run the whole stack, starts at ₹7,999 ($99) a month and includes daily backups, 24/7 uptime monitoring, Cloudflare CDN, managed SSL, a free zero-downtime migration and a P1 response under 15 minutes.

Selected configurations and list prices

Size Developer cloud, US provider AWS EC2 Mumbai, compute only ZenoCloud Mumbai
2 vCPU, 2 to 4 GB $18 for 2 vCPU and 2 GiB (no 4 GiB basic size on the page we read) t3.small $16 (2 GiB); t3.medium $33 (4 GiB); plus EBS, IPv4 and transfer ₹3,000 (about $31 at ₹95.78) for 2 vCPU and 4 GB, 3 TB included
2 vCPU, 8 GB $63 m6i.large $74, plus extras ₹5,000 VPS has 4 vCPU and 8 GB
4 vCPU, 8 to 16 GB $126 for 4 vCPU and 16 GiB m6i.xlarge $147 for 16 GiB, plus extras ₹6,500 (about $68) for 4 vCPU and 8 GB, 7 TB included
8 vCPU, 16 to 32 GB $252 for 8 vCPU and 32 GiB m5.2xlarge $295 for 32 GiB, plus extras ₹12,000 (about $125) for 8 vCPU and 16 GB, 15 TB included

Read it honestly. These are not identical configurations. At two vCPU the developer cloud's $18 plan (2 GiB) and AWS's t3.small ($16, 2 GiB) are cheaper than our ₹3,000 plan (4 GB); nothing we sell costs $4. In the four- and eight-vCPU rows, ZenoCloud has the lower listed monthly price, with half the RAM of the plans beside it and 7 to 15 TB of transfer included; AWS adds EBS, IPv4 and per-GB transfer to its compute price.

Also read what the price buys. On all three you get root on an empty Linux box. ZenoCloud is the one of the three that sells the operations team on the same order form, as an add-on or as the managed plan.

Location and connection time

The developer cloud has an Indian region and AWS has Mumbai, so none of the three forces you abroad; pick the Indian region whichever you choose. Our 12 October 2026 TCP-connect samples from Noida to AWS endpoints measured Mumbai at 31 to 45 ms, Singapore at 76 to 224 ms (one slow sample) and US East at 277 to 347 ms. Those are connection times to AWS regions from one office, not measurements of any hosting service.

A business owner running a WooCommerce store should not be the person who finds out a backup never worked. The managed column is the product for that person. The other columns are products for engineers, and good ones.

Where the developer cloud wins

Smaller and cheaper entry VMs, a mature API with infrastructure-as-code support, managed databases, Kubernetes and object storage, and an Indian region. If you are a developer prototyping, or a technical team that will do the ops work properly, it is a good platform. Count the hours: our budgeting estimate is 10 to 20 a month of patching, monitoring, backups and incidents for a production site, and at estimated Indian rates of ₹500 to ₹3,000 an hour that is ₹5,000 to ₹60,000 a month on top of the VM.

Where AWS wins

Elastic auto-scaling, a very large managed-service catalogue, and a Mumbai region. If your application uses RDS, SQS, Lambda or S3 as building blocks, EC2 is the natural compute. The costs that surprise people are not the instance price: it is EBS, NAT gateways, data transfer and the engineer time to keep an account tidy. We run AWS accounts for that reason, on a fixed monthly fee, with an AWS cost review first, so a team that belongs on AWS still has a desk that answers.

Our recommendation

  • Production site or store for Indian users, no in-house ops: ZenoCloud managed hosting from ₹7,999, or a cloud server from ₹3,000 with the managed-ops add-on quoted. Mumbai, rupee invoice, free migration, someone accountable.
  • Developer or technical team that wants root and an API: a ZenoCloud cloud server or VPS in Mumbai for the rupee invoice and the upgrade path to managed, or the developer cloud's Indian region for its API and managed add-ons.
  • AWS-native application: EC2 in Mumbai, and let us run the account if nobody owns it.

If you are on a developer cloud today and the ops hours have become your job, ask for a quote: managed plans include the migration at no charge.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a cloud server in India cost?

On 12 October 2026 a ZenoCloud cloud server in Mumbai costs ₹3,000 a month for 2 vCPU, 4 GB and 60 GB NVMe, ₹6,500 for 4 vCPU and 8 GB, and ₹12,000 for 8 vCPU and 16 GB, bandwidth included, excluding GST. Managed ops is an add-on.

How much does AWS EC2 cost in Mumbai?

On-demand Linux prices on 12 October 2026: t3.small $0.0224 an hour (about $16 a month), t3.medium $0.0448 (about $33), m6i.large $0.101 (about $74), m6i.xlarge $0.202 (about $147). EBS storage, a public IPv4 address and data transfer beyond 100 GB a month are extra.

Is a developer cloud VM cheaper than ZenoCloud?

At small sizes, yes: the US provider we checked starts at $4 a month and its 2 vCPU plan at $18, against ZenoCloud's ₹2,500 VPS. In the four- and eight-vCPU rows ZenoCloud's listed price is lower, with half the RAM and more transfer; there is no like-for-like winner.

What does managed mean on a ZenoCloud cloud server?

On managed hosting our team patches and hardens the OS, tunes the stack, monitors 24/7, runs daily backups and handles incidents with a P1 response under 15 minutes. On a self-managed cloud server, managed stack and managed ops are add-ons; the quote states the scope.

Should I choose AWS or a managed cloud server?

Choose AWS if your application depends on AWS services or needs elastic scaling, and have someone own the account. Choose a managed cloud server in Mumbai if you need a fast, predictable server for a site or store and nobody on the team wants to be the sysadmin.

Does ZenoCloud migrate my site from another cloud?

Yes, on managed plans, at no charge: files, databases, email and DNS, tested on staging before cutover, with zero downtime and a typical timeline of 24 to 72 hours depending on data volume.
