LLM: an AI model that works with text
LLM stands for large language model: an AI system trained on huge amounts of text. Most predict the next token, which lets them answer, write and summarise. In law, LL.M. means Master of Laws.

What does LLM stand for?
Large language model. “Large” refers to the parameters, the learned numbers inside it. GPT-3, described in a 2020 paper, has 175 billion.
LL.M., with full stops, is the Master of Laws degree. On 31 October 2026 our check of Google India found law colleges at the top for “LLM full form”.
How does an LLM work?
It splits text into tokens, scores every possible next token, picks one, adds it to the text and repeats. An answer is that loop run many times.
Training sets the numbers once. Inference, the loop above, reuses them on every request.
LLM, GPT and generative AI
Generative AI is any AI that creates content, including images. An LLM creates text. GPT is one family of LLMs. ChatGPT is a product built on them.
What does an LLM need?
Memory first. Weights take parameters times bytes each, and answering needs working memory on top.
| Parameters | FP16 | FP8 | 4-bit |
|---|---|---|---|
| 8 billion | 16GB | 8GB | 4GB |
| 32 billion | 64GB | 32GB | 16GB |
| 70 billion | 140GB | 70GB | 35GB |
Our arithmetic: parameters times bytes per weight (FP16 2, FP8 1, 4-bit 0.5). Weights only. See VRAM for the rest.
Questions people ask
What is LLM or LLB?
LLB is the bachelor’s degree in law and LL.M. the master’s. In AI, LLM means large language model.
Is ChatGPT an LLM?
ChatGPT is a chat product. The models behind it are LLMs, from the GPT family.
What is the difference between NLP and LLM?
NLP is the field of getting computers to work with human language. An LLM is one kind of model used in that field.
Running an LLM on a GPU
Open models need GPU memory sized to their weights. We rent NVIDIA cards in Mumbai: an H100 80GB starts at ₹1,80,000 a card a month, host included, before tax.
